Growing up in Los Angeles and experiencing his father's professional involvement as an actor, Strauss became aware of the construction of representational imagery, and the extreme amount of editing, post-processing and visual effects that goes into these falsified scenarios that are presented to us as entertainment. Many of the formal qualities of Strauss’s work revolve around questioning, revealing, mimicing and critiquing this construction of representational imagery, specifically the visual experience. His work centers around the theme of nostalgia, perceptual experiences and bringing together people in an emotional and intellectual journey. Strauss’s goal is to create thought-provoking pieces that explore the complexities of the human experience, specifically the memories and emotions that shape our lives, and to highlight the sensory experiences we often overlook in our mundane daily lives. The themes of identity, memory, and the human condition are recurrent in the artist’s work and they strive to create a sense of intimacy and vulnerability in their pieces. Strauss aims to connect with viewers on a deeper level, provoke a sense of self-reflection and empathy, as well as to bring people together to share a collective nostalgic experience. The curvilinear edge of a Tondo, always moving and always turning, continuously re-establishes the edge of the picture plane. This in turn invites a viewer to consider their point of attention. Sometimes it invites them to focus, other times to scan, looking for the balance between image and surface, surface and object, and object to space. ‘Decenter’ offers a variety of propositional approaches towards these dynamics between image, materiality and objectness. ‘Decenter’ oscillates somewhere between focus and confusion, inside and outside, painting as a picture and painting as object. There is restless variety of visual and tactile application strategies throughout the show. There is thoughtfully precise brushwork, poetic pools of color, quick flurries of spontaneous painting and beaded applique. While asymmetrical composition abounds, creating a dynamic array of images offering a range of sensibility, from quiet to loud, coatings of monochrome paint and near photo-real sculptural paintings are also present, emptying out the center altogether and blurring the line between the pictoral and the object. The artists in the show range from some of the most popular names in neon, to artists in the beginning stages of their careers. The title of the show, Bright-Line, refers to the light source class that is unique to neon, which is called a bright-line source. In comparison to a continuum light source (think LEDs), a bright-line light source only emits a definite set of individual wavelengths that is unique to the element or compound being used. The elements used as bright line sources are noble gasses: Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), Xenon (Xe), and each one has a different molecular structure. When the electrons in these gases are stimulated with electricity, they lose energy in the form of light. The different structures cause the gases to emit different wavelengths which are responsible for the different colors and properties of the light produced. Questioning the modern-day perception of consumption of media, branding, and experience we are left with a fragmented glimpse at what seems to make sense. In other words an amplified feeling of purpose, or failed purpose at that; a missed connection that wasn’t what you thought, but you thought to think - didn’t you?
